Quick, is the math straight forward with the stats and the attacks or how does it work?

i.e. if a ratatta used tackle and has a base of 56 attack and tackle has 50...
would that be 106 attack? then take that and subtract standard defense of 40 of a pidgey would be 66 which is greater than the health of the pidgey at base so...
How DOES the math work?
