After such a long wait, the server is finally back up!

I have to apologize to you guys, this clusterfuck of horrible timing and strange bugs make the delay to get back up much longer than it should have been. For the first half of the downtime, my brother was not available to help me debug and fix things, so I had no access to the server for that time.

The reason I had no access was because the server decided it didn't like its network interfaces anymore. After a short power outage, the server stopped responding or recognizing all network connections. Luckily my brother obliged, acting as a human vnc/ssh server for several hours at a time to allow me to troubleshoot. The first suspect, faulting wiring were quickly thrown out. A faulty driver was the next suspect, but it was hard to rule this out as it turns out nothing had actually been updated. Several hours of setting changes and button mashing later, no results. We gave up on ethernet and tried out a USB wifi dongle. It wasn't even recognized, but we suspected that the drivers for this were needed to function. Next, a PCI wifi module was installed. This was recognized but didn't work either. It could enumerate the wifi networks, but not connect.

Getting ready to give up, we created some linux live usb's to boot off of. These come with every driver imaginable and run on pretty much any hardware no matter how reconfigured. Usually. Two USB drives and several different creation softwares later, no live USB would boot. After the boot menu they would all error with "usb X-1: device descriptor read/64, error -32" and "device not accepting address 4, error -32". This turned out to be just the information I needed to close 100s of other google searches and forum posts.

It led me straight to this stackexchange (what a great website) post: http://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/72625/why-is-usb-not-working-in-linux-when-it-works-in-uefi-bios. One change in the bios settings had everything working again with no problem. I can only imagine what caused this extremely nondescript and seemingly useless bios setting to change to disabled when the power went out about a week ago, but what a PITA xD.

Well that's my story. Sorry again guys. Won't ever happen again (at least this specific bug).

Wh-why?

Also it seems my largest encode was ~800mb. Twice. xD: http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=345607 and http://www.nyaa.se/?page=view&tid=444795.

Attempting to compress it with Window's compression thingy; I couldn't get 7zip to compress because it kept crashing due to out-of-space.

Don't ever use windows compression. Grab WinDirStat and see what folders/files are taking up space and delete some.

Please RAID 6 or 10 or just don't RAID. For more fun see http://www.reddit.com/r/DataHoarder/

I second bakemonogatari. I also encourage anime-beginners to set up a MyAnimeList account and occasionally check http://sma.keyanifans.com/v3/ for automated recommendations based on your account.

(Note: It's still on the temp solution, there will still be some minor downtime after installing the new psu)

Edit: Since we're posting pictures:

Li, toaru is awesome, but this is Touhou, you don't belo- nevermind, Touhou crosses over with everything.

Ah, gotcha. I've seen Index, but not for quite a while. That reminds me, people have been trying to get me to watch Railgun... xD.

We we using a 460W psu from a brand that claimed to be a master of cooling.

And is it really fine to run it off a home PC?

Yep, I've got a virtual machine set up on my pc, and hooked up all the peripherals/hds that are needed :).

600W for a server box?

It is a lot, but it's a safeguard for futures upgrades. We may even wind up getting one of AMD's 200W TDP monster cpus xD.

And I thought 1000W was low...

Keep in mind that there is no GPU in the hardware, which tends to be to most power hungry component in PCs. On that note, I can run 2 (3) 7950s on a 850w psu, so great power isn't always needed.

An update for the server:
Last night, Remi and I verified the restored backups were up to date and working, after finishing installing all required software at around 5am EST. When Remi finishes tweaking the configuration, he will start the server and announce that it is back up.

I have returned from my ill-timed trip, and I have some updates.

Problem:
The power supply in the server is fried.

Bright side:
Nothing else seems to be damaged / motherboard wasn't harmed.

Temporary solution:
I am copying over backup files to my home pc, which will run the yukkuricraft minecraft server. Will update here when it is up.

Final solution:
A new, better quality psu. The 600w psu comes with a 3 year warranty, and is a well-made product (our now broken psu had a shorter warranty that had actually expired right before it went kaput). It is less than $60 with amazon prime, which will be more than covered by what fund we still have from donations.

I apologize for these problems, they have come at an inopportune time, to say the least. Hopefully the temporary solution will do for the time being, while we wait for the new power supply.

We don't have a specific one in mind. There are a lot of decisions to be made with the motherboard. Are we sticking to AMD? Are we planning on upgrading the processor (new socket type)? Do we want more slots for RAM?

After the SSD install, we will see what the current bottleneck is, then make a choice from there.
