I also thought that like a dream, he wouldn't know that it's fake, hence his emotional breakdown. Not everyone has lucid dreams. As far as he can tell, it's all real.

If John got angry or something similar now that should be more than enough for this if he don't hold back that is.



That would grant him all abilities Ansem ever have. Of course it comes with downsides too like that he won't be a spartan until he change back which he does by holding back his darkness again or it could be that it could happen simply because he doen't have enough darkness to keep himself like that.
