I think it would be better if you let your characters grow within the story, sure it is good to have a back story, but it can sooner or later be too much stuff.
Have you ever crossed the line between sanity and madness? You would be amazed by what lies beyond the fog..

Well I am aiming for a "past comes back to haunt him" kind of situation, so I want to make sure the pieces are set for when the time comes, which I have the feeling won't come until a few months later, so I'm essentially planning way ahead.

all right, I´m just warning you of making expectations and planning many things, what happens through the RP may align with what you are planning, but it can also go on a way that would clash your plans.
