As the eldest daughter of the legendary warlord family of Itou, Mirai bears the responsibility of her family's prosperity. Thus, Mirai has been disciplined heavily from the earliest of ages, resulting in an archaic girl who upholds tradition and ancient values of familial honor and bushido. She is very efficient in every action and movement, accepts only perfection in her and others, and is very loyal to her family and the few friends that get to earn the favor of the heiress of Itou.

The royal family of Itou has always been the ruling force of the country of Taiyo. Thus, they were expected to become role models: perfect without a fault. Mirai too was raised under the assumption that she too must become perfection: the exemplar figure of leadership, grace, and strength of the country. It is a very difficult status to uphold, which is done so by a very rigorous daily schedule.

Every morning at 4:00 AM Mirai wakes up and reports to her father, Emperor Yosame Itou. Then, she patrols the city with a quick jog around the outer walls for an hour, which is followed by a meditation for 30 minutes. Then, she consumes a small and quick breakfast consisting of a bowl of rice and a hearty soup. After the breakfast has been consumed, Mirai heads to the studies to learn at her own will; using the scrolls and books in the studies and her laptop. At 9 AM she trains her swordsmanship until 11 AM when she eats her lunch: a similarly bland meal of a bowl of rice, some pickled side dishes, and a different kind of soup. Afterwards, Mirai is dispatched into the city of Inja where she serves to help the citizens in their needs, whether it be a minor thing such as rescuing a cat from the rooftop to capturing a dangerous criminal. Then, at 6 PM, Mirai returns home for dinner, and finally is given some time to rest before she sleeps at 10 PM, which she spends practicing her blade anyway.

Mirai may have been a shining example of an authoritative, stern girl, but she too had a moment of blissful youth. There was a boy that she loved when she was 16, born in the outskirts of Inja as the son of a gypsy. Unlike other residents of Inja that treated her as a princess, the boy, Kubo, considered her to be just another girl. Perhaps it’s the desire of freedom within her that made her rebel; perhaps it’s the typical adolescent surge of hormones. But it ultimately made Mirai fall in love with the boy as she spent more and more time with him once she was able to leave the palace and help the city. They frolicked in the meadows, conducted secret dates in the city, and even bathed together in the waterfalls. They were madly in love, and Mirai even considered escaping just so she could be with the boy she loved so so much.

However, their love was not to be fulfilled by fate. The Kishins infrequently attack Inja, and the Itou family’s royal guards are often able to dispel their attacks with minimal casualties. However, when the Kishins launched a full scale invasion on the city, it was the one day the city was undergoing a sacred religious ceremony: where every soldier was to attend the ritual in the palace, leaving the city wide open for an assault. Thousands died, and more injured and heartbroken. Mirai was one of them; as she discovered the corpse of her beloved in amidst the ruined city of Inja.

Two years passed. Mirai returned to her strict self, albeit a bit more spiteful than before. However, a new emotion surges in her heart: her passion for vengeance. When Mirai came of age, she volunteered to enter the Balefire Academy. Once she is properly in class, she will demonstrate her Itou family honor to help bring the Kishin threat to an end and put Kubo’s soul to rest.

Seireimon: The Spirit Gate

Heightened understanding of the spiritual realm has granted Mirai the ability to tap into the spiritual realm. Particularly, she has made contact with the blacksmiths of the spiritual world, or Seireikai, giving her access to their weapons.

A brief moment of meditation is all it takes for Mirai to channel the Seireimon. After the reprieve, she may bring forth any kind of blade imaginable to strike down her foe; whether it be a katana, a halberd, a nageyashi, or a tanto. The spiritual blades summoned from the Seireimon have a very distinctive turquoise sheen to them. The variety of weapons that Mirai can summon from the Sireimon is nigh endless. Thus, she can quickly change stances and take the pace of a battle in a few seconds’ time.

For the spiritual objects does not have physical form in the human realm, or Ningenkai, the spiritual blades from Seireimon disappear and disintegrate into tiny soul pieces after mere seconds. The cost of keeping Seireimon summoned is taxing, so Mirai has rather small window of opportunity while her Seireimon is up, but is not completely crippled without it thanks to her physical sword.

Weapon:

Mirai’s signature blade, Yoake no Sakura, is a masterfully crafted sword. A little shorter than conventional katana, it is lighter and yet more hardened than regular blades. Its sheath has cherry blossoms drawn onto its’ black frame, while the sword handle’s kashira, or the buttcap, has a piece of Kubo’s white hair as a tassel, preserved to stop it from its’ sluggish decomposition.

Other gear:

Mirai keeps herself modest to everything in life. Mirai’s usual attires are either a crisp and simple white long-sleeved shirt with some kind of hardy pants, or a traditional Taiyan dress for more former occasions. She does have a sleek white laptop, but she hardly uses it for anything other than academic purposes.

Occupation: First Year

Side Occupation(s): While the royal Itou family has absolutely no problem paying for Mirai’s tuition, Mirai does not like to frugally waste her family’s wealth. Instead, she resorts to the salary she earns from being a kendo teacher

Reason for attending the academy: To defend her country Taiyo from Kishin threat and avenge the death of Kubo, the only boy she has ever loved romantically.

Extra classes and clubs: Mirai does not find clubs and extracurricular activities to be helpful in becoming a proficient Kishin hunter. Instead, she returns straight to her dormitory to meditate and practice swordsmanship. It is very rare for Mirai to leave her dormitory to socialize at the start of the school year.

Directly contrasting her older twin sister, Setsuna is the culmination of what your parents told you not to do. However, she is probably easier to socialize with than Mirai, and a whole lot of fun, too. While she does do rather hardcore drugs and commit to other less than savory acts, she never enforces them onto her friends. She may be bad, but she does not wish for her friends to walk her same path.

Although the Itou family appears without fault, they are actually inflicted with a curse. Fearing that the sudden formation of the fourth empire would result in a widespread chaos and a shattering blow to the balanced warfare between the three existing empires, a sorcerer of The Kandian Society inflicted an irreversible curse onto the first founder of Taiyo, Kai’en Itou. The curse seemingly did nothing to Kai’en, but it did inflict his eldest son, Kurotachi Itou, with the power of the demons.

The curse of Itou granted the cursed incredible powers: strength to defeat 20 men in hand-to-hand combat, agility to outrun a speeding bear, endurance to go without food or water for several weeks. However, the power had a crippling drawback of demonic spirits constantly haunting the inflicted, who is marked by flower-and-butterfly tattoo that grows and besmirches more and more skin as the curse becomes more severe. The cursed gradually goes insane, cutting anything and anyone he or she sees until the demon completely overtake him or her. Kurotachi killed approximately 270 men before he was cut down by his younger brother, Ryujou Itou, in a duel to the death.

From then on, the curse of Itou passed down to a child from generation to generation, all to either be cut down or to kill themselves before the age of 25. To prevent the curse from dealing too much damage to the family’s reputation, the cursed were isolated from the family, not allowed to appear in any sort of ceremonies, events, or even religious rituals. Then, when the cursed showed signs of going insane, special task forces were secretly sent to their room to assassinate them.

And so fell several cursed members of the family, until Setsuna was born. The younger of the twin sisters, Setsuna’s skin was marked with the curse from birth. Saddened that his child had to be the cursed individual, the Emperor of Taiyo, Yosame Itou, ordered Setsuna to be put into isolation away from the family. While Mirai received the attention of the royal family, Setsuna was left abandoned in a shabby shack that previous cursed individuals were killed in.

While Setsuna’s mother and father forsake her for the sake of their family namesake, one of their servants: a maid by the name of Felicia, took pity on Setsuna. Without anyone knowing, Felicia took care of Setsuna, teaching her everything from reading and writing to being a proper woman. While Setsuna was grateful that Felicia took the risk to take care after her, she still bore hatred towards her family for isolating her away from them. In secret, Setsuna stole a blade from the bladesmith in the city of Inja and began training.

When Setsuna became 10, she first heard the demons’ whispers. It drove her into nightmarish visions and haunted her nearly into insanity, but Setsuna overcame. Subsequent attacks were also thwarted with increased ease. For once, someone was able to control the curse effectively, although her mind began to twist and turn. Because Setsuna wasn’t given anything that she desired, she resorted to crime to earn them. While Felicia could not stop her, she did plead Setsuna to at least commit to the crime for the poor and the common. Petty thievery was what she started with, but as she grew up and became friends with teenage juveniles and wanted criminals in the city, Setsuna’s crimes grew: performing raids in the rich nobles’ warehouses to distribute the wealth to the poor. Eventually rumors of a sword-wielding criminal who steals from the rich and gives to the poor crept all across the city of Inja.

Mirai at the age of 13 was sent to investigate this issue. While she was still very young, she was already a prodigal swordmaster, which lead the royalty to believe that they will make quick work of this criminal. However, when Mirai returned, she was heavily wounded. She reported that she discovered that Setsuna was the mysterious criminal; however, instead of the curse overtaking her, the curse instead worked WITH Setsuna. The demonic curse and Setsuna worked together to overpower Mirai, who escaped barely with her life.

It was clear to the royal family that Setsuna was different from the other cursed individuals. After a meeting with the counselors and advisors, Yosame allowed Setsuna back into the family, her and Felicia’s crimes forgiven. Setsuna begrudgingly accepted the invitation, but she never strayed away from the art of justified crime. She would leave for weeks at a time, and return home for only a few days before taking off again. To Setsuna, the outside world was more of a home to her than the Castle Kokugatsu.

When the city of Inja was attacked by the Kishins, Setsuna was not there. She returned a week later to find the city in disrepair. On one hand, she was glad that her family had to suffer, but she also did not like how the rest of the civilians were in agony as well. Setsuna wanted to protect the city, but she did not know how; for she was just one girl against so many Kishins.

Fortunately for Setsuna, she overheard the servants talking about Mirai’s training to enter the Balefire Academy. Gathering all the information she can about this academy, Setsuna also trained in secret and, after coming of age, left stealthily to the academy on the same day Mirai left. She just hopes that the academy will be a bit more lenient on her past actions and give her an equal chance to learn.

Aura:

Demon Kurai Aki

While there are more than 108 demonic spirits that haunt Setsuna, the demon named Kurai Aki is the biggest demon that is responsible for the curse. With the price of her insanity, Kurai Aki grants Setsuna amazing powers, such as:

- Superhuman strength and dexterity, such as being able to cut through rocks with her blade and being able to run on walls for more than 7 seconds
- Unparalleled endurance to physical pain and suffering
- Heightened senses (sight, hearing, smell)

However, the most unique power that Kurai Aki provides to Setsuna is the ability to phase in and out of spiritual realm. With Kurai Aki’s power, Setsuna can literally turn into a ghost, gaining the ability to phase through walls. She can also, in a clutch, evade most physical attacks and use her rather translucent self to gain an advantage.

Using this ability, however, drastically lowers Setsuna’s sanity. She uses drugs and pills to combat the insanity, but the tattoo on her shoulder and arms grows nonetheless.

Unlike popular belief, Kurai Aki is not an oni-like demon with a heavy club and red skin. In fact, Kurai Aki is a handsome young man wearing a black garb.

Weapon:

Setsuna wields the blade she calls “Duskfall”. It is a purely black sword with completely black sheathe hiding the dark metal blade. When Kurai Aki’s power turns her into a ghost form, the blade seemingly burns in purple sheen; meaning that the sword has already attuned to the demon’s power.

Other gear:

Unlike Mirai, Setsuna was admitted into the academy without support from her parents or any of the royal family. Thus, Setsuna has very little other than her blade. Setsuna’s attires show a LOT more skin than Mirai’s, and Setsuna nearly always exposes her shoulders whenever possible. To her, the tattoos on her shoulder is not a ticking time bomb; but a source of her power.

Occupation: First Year

Side Occupation(s): Unlike Mirai, Setsuna’s tuition is not being paid by her parents. But she has no problem paying for her tuition and other expenses because she sells drugs. In fact she makes more money than her older sister.

Reason for attending the academy: To defend the country of Taiyo and everyone who suffer from the Kishin attacks. The nobles can go suck a big one, though, since Setsuna only fights for the poor and the defenseless.

Extra classes and clubs: Setsuna might like to join a club; depending on how it’s like. Doesn’t matter what kind of club it is, as long as the leader isn’t a stuck-up like her sister Mirai is.
