It wraps around his armor and is 1mm away from the armor itself.
That being said, it disappears during reentry, due to the plasma cone destroying it.
It's only the armor itself that protects him, which brings a VERY interesting turn of events.
Remember how John's right leg was damaged? That could be a problem...

"Naw, don't do that. You'll give us all nightmares. No Spartans either.", Lily said to Dr. Neuman.
