There's not very much we can do about it now, other than check the characters being introduced in the future.

All characters not originally from video games. He wanted us to stop playing with them, but I think that will be a little hard.

All I'm going to say is that John was supposed to be a video game character. It just happened to be that the publishing process was faster than the release of the game. Last I remember, they were supposed to compliment each other. I'd say that John is in the green.
