John was a little surprised by the somewhat odd retaliation, as well as Aegis's attack being ineffective, but he continued the attack. This time, he called out a different attack.
"Aegis, use Headbutt.", John said to Aegis.

John could see that the Staryu's gem was becoming duller after the attack. Judging by how the Staryu quickly rose back to its feet, it was not ready to be captured. Instead, John looked over to Aegis and spoke.
"Aegis, follow me.", John said as he began to run to the other side of the pond.
Aegis followed John, and they quickly caught back up to the Staryu. As soon as they arrived, John called out another attack.
"Aegis, use Headbutt again.", John said.

John felt a reasonable amount of remorse for what he was putting this Pokemon through. This whole world basically relied on cockfights and pitting animal against animal. It felt somewhat wrong to John, but if he wanted to go home, then he would have to adapt. Seeing that the Staryu was significantly weakened, John pulled a Great Ball off of his magnetic holster and threw it towards the Staryu. The Pokeball blasted the Staryu with a red streak of energy and trapped it inside, but John noticed that the Pokeball was twitching. Was it going to escape the Great Ball? John did not know. Not wanting to take any chances, John waited by and observed the process.

"Good job Aegis. You performed perfectly.", John calmly said as he was about to put Aegis back in his Pokeball.
Suddenly, Aegis retrieved the Great Ball, brought it up to him, and seemed to be trying to tell John something. John was a little surprised by Aegis's sudden gesture and knelt down in front of him, balancing himself on one hand as well.
"Hm? What is it?", John calmly asked Aegis, wondering what he wanted.

Pokemon liked to be praised, and perhaps John had not been as emotionally connected as he should have been. John realized that perhaps he would have to do better than saying that Aegis did well. John may not have been very emotionally connected, but Aegis was. The least John could do is return the affection and make Aegis feel happy.
"Just like a dog or a cat, aren't you?", John rhetorically asked Aegis as he reached down and rubbed his hand along the back and sides of Aegis's shell like one would do to a cat.
