"Mhm." Koishi said. She pulled out a potion she'd been saving from her hat and sprayed it on Wiggly, healing him, and returning him to it's pokeball.

With nowhere else to go, Koishi went up with a little spring in her step.

Sometimes when you're driving down a road, a bug hits your windshield. It's ugly and unpleasant, but you just activate the wipers / cleaning fluid and it's gone in a few seconds. It's just part of driving down the road. You don't dwell on it, because that'd be silly. Bugs aren't worth the time.

You just discard their guts and keep on driving.

"Where is Granite Cave?" Yuuka asked Juna.

"Granite Cave is north of here. It borders the shoreline and the entrance is hard to find." Juna answered. "I don't want to trouble you two, but thanks for all the help."

After tireless minutes of licking and paralyzing, the stone snake fell to the ground, rumbling the floor as he fainted.

"You cheap bastard." The biker punk groaned as he handed Renamon 1,800 Pokedollars and trodded to a hidden door. "The gym leader is just up that stairway."

When John saw that the Machop was getting tougher, John quickly thought of what might happen if he said for Astron to use Harden again. If he did, then Theodore would most likely follow suit, and if that happened, then both Astron and the Machop's damage would be minimal. In that case, Astron would have to attack. John knew that Astron was an agile pokemon, so hopefully his agility would win him the battle against the Machop's strength.

"Astron, use Water Gun.", John called out.

The water jet struck Machop on his stomach, causing the fighting type to skid backwards.

"Hmm, a special attacker! No doubt you've prepared that for a Rock type Pokemon." Theodore calculated. "But my Machop is not a rock type, so he only takes small amount of damage! Machop, slide in for a Karate Chop!"

Machop dashed, as fast as a trained athlete, and delivered a chop to Astron's shell. Astron's Hardened body could've weathered the blow if Machop wasn't Bulked Up. A crack formed on Astron's gem, to which Astron wasn't too happy about.

Seeing how the fight was going to take longer than normal, John decided that it was best to just try and whittle away the Machop's health.

"Astron, use Water Gun.", John called out to Astron.

"Come on, Machop! Let's tank this!" Theodore ordered, anf the Machop held his arm up in defensive position.

                Unfortunately for him...

                CRITICAL HIT!

The enemy Machop, taken by surprise by the strength of the water blast, was strewn off to the side, fainted.

                "What!" Theodore gasped. "How?"

John was almost just as surprised as Theodore was. In truth, John was expecting the battle to take much longer than that, but it appeared that John was wrong. John didn't have a clear idea what had happened, but apparently, Astron's attack struck the Machop just right, causing the attack to deal more damage than normal.

"Good job, Astron.", John said to Astron, praising him for a job well done.

After that, John pulled out Astron's pokeball and Astron was dematerialized into a red bolt of energy, which then was absorbed by the pokeball.

"Okay. I'll admit, that was unusual.", John finally said to Theodore in a calm tone.

"Critical hits..." Theodore chuckled in defeat. "I've heard that Pokemon attacks have a chance to gain double damage, but to experience it myself..."

"But hey, you won, fair and square. Now go onward, the gym leader awaits."

Theodore retrieved the Machop back into his Pokeball and walked through a hidden door.

John nodded at Theodore and continued onward, taking extra care on the rickety-looking bridge. The drop down below didn't look very far, but John still did not want to fall. After all, it would be a little embarrassing, even to a hardened soldier like John. The wooden boards creaked under the immense weight they had to hold, but luckily they managed to hold John's weight. After spending a minute carefully stepping on various parts of the bridge, John finally made it across and traveled deeper into the cave.

Both Koishi, John, and Renamon finished their first gym trainer battle and ascended into the same room: a rugged yet embellished room made of rare rocks and minerals studded on the side. At the center of it stood Roark, the gym leader.

Roark was a young boy, but not as young as the youngsters John and Renamon saw. He wore a basic black shirt with gray and yellow short-sleeve jacket, along with the grey explorer's pants in similar design to the jacket. He had a red miner's hat with headlight on, cordovan hair, and black horn-rimmed glasses. On his feet sat a pair of all-purpose black boots. Koishi already has seen Roark before, but in the gym, Roark had a completely new aura: that of a trainer that can seriously give them a whooping, even in 3 to 1.

"Welcome, trainers." Roark said. "And welcome back, Koishi. I'm Roark, the Gym Leader. I'm but one Trainer who decided to walk proudly with Rock-type Pokemon. As the Gym Leader, I need to see your potential as a trainer. And, I'll need to see the toughness of the Pokemon that battle with you!"

John was kind of surprised that Koishi already knew the Gym Leader. Perhaps they met while Roark was off duty? Feeling curious, John looked over to Koishi and spoke.

"You know him?", John asked in a slightly curious tone.

"Granite Cave. Got it." Sherry reclaimed her pokemon and bounced out only to come back in again. She flashed Juna a quick two-fingered salute. "Sit tight. We'll be back soon."

As the woman trotted outside, she wondered where her bout of enthusiasm and determination came from. Just a moment ago she was annoyed that she had offered her help to take care of another group of delinquents, but now she was acting as if it was everything she ever wanted. It was just her heart speaking again. A good person wouldn't hesitate to jump in and help a person down on their luck. Leon and Claire would be so proud of her for her behavior. Smiling, Sherry reached for one of her pokeballs before looking over for Yuuka.

                              Route 106

Route 106 was a beach-side route that offered tranquil relaxation and occasional battle for trainers in Dewford Town to enjoy, since the town itself was too small for a large amount of conventional Pokemon battles to be held safely. The route stretched out about a few hundred yards, and at the end of the beach stood a large cliff with a small cave entrance: Granite Cave.
