Scarlet Devil Mansion - Flandre's Chamber

"What happened to Mr. Mundy and the scepter?" Patchouli repeated. She tapped her chin, a coy expression in her eyes. "Why... I do not know, little Flandre. You could ask him through the book, but I doubt he'll give the true answer. For that, you need to read the sequel, which I may bring tomorrow. But alas... I've spent enough time here already."

Patchouli yawned and got up from the bean bag chair. She arched her back and stretched before placing the red book against the chair for Flandre, should she want it. It felt fantastic to finish a story, and even more so to read it to Flandre, whose genuine curiosity and desire for knowledge touched a chord Patchouli didn't even knew she had. If she could teach her properly, perhaps there was hope for the little vampire yet.

"I must be off, Flandre. There are other things I must attend to, but I promise to return tomorrow to assist you with your studies, and perhaps even read another story to you." The mage glanced to the door out of the chamber before looking down at Flandre. "Are there any more questions?"

"In your case, I would cut the traditions. You make good food. You sell your good food to the humans, you could get quite a bit of revenue. They might be a little cautious at first, but eventually, word will spread of your business, and hell, you could even get people coming from all over Gensokyo to your place." Nue explained. "Just think of all the possibilities."

"Got it special just for you." Orin pulled off the napkin to show a light brown looking snowcone with a very strong scent of pie. "It's Apple pie flavored. Trust me, it's delicious."

      Flandre's Chamber

"Have you ever gone on an adventure Patchy?" Flandre asked.

Sometimes when you're driving down a road, a bug hits your windshield. It's ugly and unpleasant, but you just activate the wipers / cleaning fluid and it's gone in a few seconds. It's just part of driving down the road. You don't dwell on it, because that'd be silly. Bugs aren't worth the time.

You just discard their guts and keep on driving.

Flandre's question took Patchouli back. She remembered wandering off on her own when her emotions got the better of her after a fight with Remilia, a brief foray into the forests to search for ingredients, and an epic quest to get to the bottom of the Scarlet Weather incident which ended in her beating up a drunken oni. But, most of Patchouli's adventures involved her and her books, and she did not go anywhere physically. Mentally, however, she traveled and experienced more than any god could ever hope for. She nodded to the little vampire.

"I have gone on an adventure, little Flandre. Many, in fact. I went to Heaven once... It was unpleasant."

          Flandre looked confused.

          "What's Heaven?" Flandre asked.

Mystia had to wonder, what good will money do to a Youkai like her? Then it struck her... Wriggle and Yuuka has been gathering honey to sell to the villagers and other Youkais, and they've been able to use the money they've received to better their livestyles... heck, Wriggle has a gaming room all for herself, bringing in various Kappatech equipments and outside-world technology to play outside-world entertainment devices. Would this help her achieve her own interests in life?

"Hmm, thanks for your insight." Mystia said. "I'll make sure to bill you to the Myouren Temple."

Patchouli's first instinct was to berate the girl, yet she wisely kept her mouth shut. She needed to get a better handle on herself when it came to dealing with the ignorant, and Flandre was just that. But it was not Flandre's fault. She had been locked away for hundreds of years, so basically all that she knew came from what happened around her, which was not much at all.

"Heaven... Heaven is a place far up in the clouds, higher than any mountain can reach. It consists of many separate realms. Celestials, Angels, and other heavenly beings reside there," Patchouli explained. "These residents generally live carefree lives filled with fishing, song, dance, sake, and... peaches. They may also find enjoyment in viewing events that unfold on the Earth." The mage blinked. "They are powerful beings, but so are you, little Flandre."

"I better eat it before it melts in here. Thank you, Orin.", Utsuho said to Orin as she grabbed the snowcone with her free hand.

Utsuho could already see that the ice was already melting, so she quickly began to eat it, trying to make sure none of it was wasted. Just as Orin had said, the apple pie flavored snowcone was delicious. In fact, it was better than some of the other flavors Utsuho had tried.

"Mmm. You were right, Orin. It does taste good.", Utsuho said.

"Never underestimate the power of putting a ridiculous flavor on a snowcone." Orin chuckled.

Patchouli smiled at Flandre's curiosity. She may be a menace, but she had dreams and aspirations of her own, and no-one could rob them from her. The mage went to the door and opened it, wider this time for a nonchalant exit. Flandre knew her place, even if she didn't. In time, perhaps she would be able to venture out on her own when she showed proper restraint.

"I wish you could see it too, Flandre. I wish you could see a lot of things."

And with that, the mage disappeared beyond the door and shut it behind her. She turned and brought up the wards again, even if she felt a small tinge of pain at doing so.

                    Human Village

                    "Thanks lady!"

"You're most welcome," the lady replied as she handed the children their lost ball. She gave a warm smile as they took it and ran off to play once again. "Children..."

The human village was always active and filled with people going about their business. Adventurers wandered in search of new equipment, farmers and merchants hawked their wares, elderly couples waddled about and gave sage advice, and a few youkai were mulling about, doing their best to interact with the humans before them. It was everything Byakuren Hijiri had dreamed about when she came to the human village. A place filled with peace and happiness instead of war and pestilence. She folded her hands over her black and white dress and sighed.

She had come to the village to check up on the youkai living nearby to make sure they were not causing too much of a ruckus. It was not her job to be a peacekeeper, but she figured she could perform that duty by preaching and acting by example. Gensokyo was a strange world that seemed to keep a good balance, but Byakuren always strived to make things better for those who lived in it. She was tempted to offer a small class in the village to teach children about youkai in an effort to smooth relations, but she realized that her main base of operations would always be her temple. It was there where her power could be beheld by all, and it was there where she was the most comfortable.

Not to say that she wasn't comfortable here in the human village. Byakuren loved humans. She loved everyone on that note, but human children tugged at her heartstrings more often than not. Perhaps it was her maternal instincts, but Byakuren couldn't help but stare at the children and wish for one of her own to care for. She smiled at that idea before turning around to head to the marketplace.

As Patchouli left, a rumbling could be felt through the entire mansion.

While Utsuho ate her snowcone, she decided to make small-talk with her friend Orin. It had been a while since they just sat and talked, especially since Utsuho had been so busy lately.

"So, how was your day?", Utsuho asked Orin.

"See you later." Mystia unamusedly waved her hand, greeting the Nue as she escaped her vision. Then she sat down and sighed, exhausted from all this thinking. So far, two Youkai agreed that she was living an old lifestyle. Are humans really a way for Youkai to live a new life? They always seemed so hopeless whenever she attacked them... To think that she would benefit from them still seemed like a bizarre idea.

"I might as well visit Wriggle..." Mystia stretched herself back up and prepared to pack the cart and see her best friend.

Patchouli felt the rumbling in the mansion and raised her eyebrows in concern. It felt like a tremor, the aftershock of a strong earthquake, but she nor anyone she knew had any idea of an earthquake happening this month. Did that rumbling come from Flandre? How unusual, Patchouli thought to herself. It wasn't like Flandre to rock the mansion when she was upset in her chambers, for the wards placed on the doors should have dampened her powers. If the girl was angry, the residents of the mansion would be safe from her wrath.

Perhaps it was nothing, Patchouli thought to herself. That was a lie, but the mage bought it nonetheless. She hovered down the basement hallways and returned to the ground floor of the mansion to gaze outside. Things looked normal enough outside, but inside? Had something changed? There was hardly anything to observe besides the tremor, so Patchouli backed away from the window and touched down on the red carpet of the halls. She dusted off her robes and walked towards her library.

                            Human Village

In a sense, the only thing Byakuren did not like about the human village was that she received hostile looks from some of the villagers and youkai. Most saw her as a saint and a teacher who strived to better the relation between humans and youkai, but others saw her as a devil. Her only crime was trying to bring humans and youkai together, and she realized that some did not want to interact with each other at all. It was their choice, and Byakuren honored it.

She did her best to ignore the looks of a few disgruntled fishermen as she bought herself some curry to relax with. Sitting on a bench in the marketplace, she ate in silence, her mind swimming with thoughts... About her temple, about humanity, and about her motherly instincts. Was she being selfish in wanting a child to look after, or was it just part of her nature? It had been such a long time since she was truly human...

Nitori's pace was interrupted when she heard Yuugi say something. She was focused on the walking, and wasn't listening. "I know Utsuho." she said. "She's the crow I was talking to earlier, and the reason I'm here. I want to know if something happened."
She didn't know the kasha standing next to Utsuho. "Souls that fuel hell? Sounds like someone you don't want to pick a fight with." she replied, keeping her eyes on the two figures ahead of them.

She wiped the sweat of her brow. She couldn't handle the heat very well, which was somewhat ironic considering she went down here to investigate a temperature drop.
Nitori smiled. The kasha actually had two pairs of ears - one like humans had, and one pair of cat ears on her head. "I wonder if one of them is fake?" she thought to herself.

                                Hate.

That was the feeling others had when she was close to them.
She could feel it - if she went outside, everyone was either scared or hated her. All just because of what she could do.
She was tired of hostile thoughts, of scared humans and youkai, of people that had an opinion about her without even knowing her.
How many times didn't she meet someone new, hoping to start fresh, only to hear that person think: "That's the satori! She can read my mind, I should watch out and get away or something."

Her little sister left her - Koishi wasn't able to take all of the negative feelings, and closed her third eye, removing any rational thoughts with it. She left, randomly wandering around the world, doing things on a whim, without thinking about consequences.

Yet, she felt like going outside. She hadn't heard something from Utsuho for a while.
"Yes." Satori thought. "Let's go visit Utsuho."
